body loses to much bone, leading to fragile bone and increased risk for fractures

A
- kyphosis “hunchback”
- back pain
- decreased height
- balance issues

Risk factors for Osteoporosis
A
- calcium or vitamin D deficiency
- estrogen deficiency
- low body weight
- immobility
- corticosteroid use
- hyperparathyroidism

Patient teaching for Osteoporosis
A
- perform weight bearing exercise
- increase calcium and vitamin D intake
- wear sunscreen if exposed to sun
- prevent falls
