Closed/simple Fracture
does not break the skins surface

breaks skins surface, thus increasing risk for infection

Risk factors for fractures
- osteoporosis
- paget’s disease
- long term steroid use
- falls
- bone cancer
- substance abuse
S/S of Fracture
- pain
- edema
- ecchymosis (bleeding under skin: discoloration)
- deformed extremity
- muscle spasm
Complications of Fracture
- fat embolism
- compartment syndrome
- osteomyelitis
What is a fat embolism
fat from bone marrow travels to lung
S/S of fat embolism
- dyspnea, tachypnea
- tachycardia
- confusion
- petechiae on upper body (round spots on skin from bleeding)
Treatment for fat embolism
- bedrest
- oxygen
- IV fluids
