What is Gout
Metabolic disease causing increased uric acid crystals (hyperuricemia) to be deposited in the joints
What is primary gout
overproduction of uric acid
What is secondary gout
hyperuricemia caused by another disease (CDK) or medication (thiazide diuretics, beta blockers
S/S of Gout
- joint pain
- erythema
- swelling
- tophi in the great toe (build up of uric acid)
Lab values determining Gout is present
- increased uric acid levels
- synovial fluid exam that shows urate crystals
Treatment for Gout that is acute
Colchicine
Treatment for Gout that is chronic
- allopurinol
- probenecid
Other treatments for Gout
- NSAIDs
- ice packs
What should patients avoid if they have Gout
-alcohol
-avoid dieting (starvation)
-purine-rich food
(red or organ meat, shellfish, fructose drinks)
What should you instruct the patient to do if they have Gout
- increase fluid intake
- reduce stress
