What is an Arthroplasty
A
surgical replacement of a diseased joint w/ a prosthetic joint

A
- osteoarthritis
- rheumatoid arthritis
- trauma
- congenital defects

Contraindications of Arthroplasty
A
- active infection
- advanced osteoporosis

Pre-op nursing care of Arthroplasty
A
- administer epoetin alfa or advise pt to provide autologous blood to prevent post-op anemia
- advise pt to shower w/ antiseptic soap before surgery

Post-op nursing care for Arthroplasty
A
- monitor for S/S of thromboembolism (DVT, PE)
- monitor for infection, bleeding, neruovascular compromise

How can you prevent thromboembolism
A
- apply SCDs or antiembolic stockings
- encourage early ambulation and exercise
- administer anticoagulant

A
take antibiotics before dental work or invasive procedures
