what can you tell me about the bone quantity and quality for a patient with Osteoporosis ?
The bone quality is sufficient but the bone quantity is lessened.
What type of patient is Osteoporosis more common?
Post menopausal female. Ages over 80.
What disease can cause Osteoporotic bones ?
Renal disease. As the calcium is not being reabsorbed.
What are two radiographic appearances of Osteoporosis ?
1) Well defined pencil thin cortices.
2) Decreased thickness and amount of trabeculae.
Where does Osteoporosis occur fist ?
Periarticular.
Where is Osteoporosis more prominent ?
Weight bearing joints.
What treatment can be used for a patient with Osteoporosis ?
BISPHOSPHONATE TREATMENT
What are the risks of taking Bisphosphonates ?
Induced fractures if no breaks between doses.
What would you consider if Osteoporosis is diffuse (you see it in more than one joint) ?
Is it Congenital (condition exists at birth)
Parathyroid
Nutritional deficit.
What would you consider if Osteoporosis is localised ?
disuse (from immobilisation of a fracture site) or
Infection
What is it called when Osteoporosis is caused by aging ?
primary Osteoporosis.
What does disuse Osteopenia look like ?
It occurs more rapidly and gives a permeative patchy appearance.
What would you think is demineralisation was more localised ?
Disuse/ Reflex Sympathetic dystrophy syndrome/
