Osteomyelitis, Septic arthritis, and myositis Flashcards
What is ostiomyelitis?
- inflammation of bone caused by infectious organisms
What is the etiology of osteomyelitis?
- Bacteria (S. Aureus, Strep B, P. Aeruginosa)
- Fungus
- Parasites
- Virus
What are risk factors for osteomyelitis?
- chronic illness
- immunosuppression
- poor nutrition
- folks with circulation disorder
What is the pathology of osteomyelitis?
- infection develops in metaphysis of long bone
2. often comes from a puncture wound
What are the S/S of osteomyelitis?
- fever
- local tenderness
- swelling,
- Pain one infection reaches cortical bone
What is the treatment of osteomyelitis?
- Antibiotics based on culture
- may require 6 weeks or more
- use of cephalosporins common
- surgery for dibridement area
What is the prognosis of osteomyelitis?
- risk of death negligible
2. need for amputation possible
When osteomyelitis moves to the bone it is called…
septic arthritis
What septic arthritis?
an infected joint
What are the risk factors of septic arthritis?
immunosuppression , diabetes, and trauma
What is the etiology of septic arthrits?
- bacteria
- fungi,
- viruses
What are the S/S of septic arthritis?
- acute joint pain
- swelling
- tenderness
- loss of motion
- fever and chills (not always present)
What is the treatment of septic arthritis?
- IT is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY
- IV antibiotics
- possible open drainage (very likely)
What is the prognosis of septic arthritis?
- prognosis improves with early detection and onset of treatment
- permanent joint destruction is possible
What is the mortality rate of septic arthritis?
8-15 %
What is myositis?
a group of conditions
What is the etiology of myositis?
- viral
- bacterial
- parasitic agents
- resulting inflammation can create functional limitations
What are the clinical manifestation of myositis?
- related to inflammation
- malaise
- fever
- muscle swelling
- pain
- tenderness
- lethargy - muscle weakness
- risk of muscle necrosis
- Possible dysphagia, vasculitis, raynaud’s phenomomenon, cardiomyopathy, pulmonary fibrosis, thickening of the skin
What is the treatment for myositis?
immunosppressive therapy
- corticosteroids
- OT/PT- good contraction, watch for fatigue, teaching compensation techniques
