Cerebral Palsy Flashcards
1
Q
What is cerebral palsy?
A
- NONPROGRESSIVE brain lesion of the cerebral cortex
2. disorder of neuromuscular control of posture and voluntary movement
2
Q
What are possible impairments of CP?
A
- speech, vision, hearing, and perceptual abilities
- seizure disorders
- hydrocephalus
- microcephalus
- mental retardation
3
Q
What are the classifications of CP?
A
- hypotonia (low tone)
- Hypertoina (high tone: spasticity)
- Mixed or fluctuating tone (athetoid)
* Tone affects all levels of CP
4
Q
What is the limb involvement of CP?
A
- hemiplegia - one arm one leg of same side of body
- diplegia- both legs
- quadraplegia- all extremities
5
Q
What are assocaited terms/descriptors of CP?
A
- ataxia- lack of coordination
2. dyskinesia
6
Q
What is the incidence and etiology of CP?
A
- 2.5 to 4.5 per 1000 births in US
- caused by prenatal, perinatal, or post natal condition that cuases cerebral anoxia, hemorrhage or damage to cerebral cortex
7
Q
What are the clinical manifestations of CP?
A
- alterations in muscle tone
- delayed motor development
- abnormal motor development
8
Q
How is CP diagnosised?
A
- good history
- observation
- neurological examination
- X-ray, CT, EEG
9
Q
How is CP treated?
A
- team approach
- Medications***
- skeletal muscle relxants
- baclofen (oral and pump)- decreases spasticity
- diazepam (valium)- muscle relaxant
- dantrolene - motor point blocks and nerve blocks
- botox
- phenol - Surgeries
- orthopedic surgeries (tendon releases and transfers
- spinal fusions
- dorsal root rhizotomy- good for spastic
10
Q
What is the prognosis of CP?
A
- normal life span when mild to moderate
2. poor prognosis when severely involved because of secondary complications
11
Q
What are the therapies for CP?
A
- direct handling techniques
- positioning/splinting/serial casting
- post surgical therpies
- adaptive equipmet
- ADL’s
- Feeding and swallowing
