Describe osteoarthritis
A
- Also known as Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD)
- Most common form of all articular disorders
- First appears in 20’s and 30’s and becomes universal by 70’s
- Most in their 40’s have pathological changes in weight bearing joints; however, few are symptomatic

- Unknown
- Predisposing Factors include:
- aging
- obesity
- joint trauma
- genetics

What is the pathology of osteoarthritis?
A
- Destruction of cartilage
- Bone Spur formation
- Mild synovitis
- Not systemic (could be unilateral)

What are S/S of osteoarthritis?
A
- Pain–worsened by exercise
- Morning Stiffness–improved by exercise or activity (light resistance to warm up)
- Decreased joint motion
- Tenderness
- Crepitus
- Joint Enlargement
- Subluxation and Deformity

What is the treatment for osteoarthritis?
A
- Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)
- Aspirin
- Ibuprofen - Corticosteroids
- intra-articular injections
- Muscle relaxants–diazepam
- Anti-depressants–in rare cases

How do you rehab osteoarthritis?
A
- Prevent deformities
- Joint protection - Patient Education
- Gait aids–canes, walkers
- Adaptive equipment
- Exercises for range of motion and strengthening.
- Pool therapy

What is the prognosis of osteoarthritis?
A
- OA affects quality of life but not quantity.
- Normal life span
- May result in functional limitations
- May interfere with occupations, hobbies, and recreational activities
