Bursitis Flashcards
Describe bursitis
- Bursa are synovial lined sacs which exist normally at sites of friction between tendons and bone and between these structures and skin;
- may also be present at sites caused by bony prominences and protruding parts of metal implants
What are the types of bursitis?
- friction bursitis
- chemical bursitis
- septic bursitis
What is friction bursitis?
- a result of excessive friction resulting in inflammation and thickening of bursal wall
- common sites
1. first MT head–bunion
2. subacromial
3. subdeltoid
4. prepatellar (housemaids knee)
5. ischial bursitis
6. olecranon bursitis
What is chemical bursitis?
resulting from metabolic disorders of excessive calcium or urate salts
What is septic bursitis?
infectious organisms
What are S/S of bursitis?
- tenderness and pain with movement of part
2. restricted movement, swelling and edema at site
How is bursitis diagnosed?
- medical history
- blood and urine tests
- arthrograms
How is bursitis treated?
- cryotherapy
- immobilization
- analgesics and antibiotics
- anti-inflammatories
- ROM when sub-acute
- excision of bursa or surrounding tissue
What is tendinitis?
inflammation of the musculotendinous unit
What is the etiology of tendinitis?
- trauma
- postural malalignment
- biomechanical overuse
- overuse
- other disease processes
What are S/S of tendinitis?
- localized dull aching and severe pain with movement
How is tendinitis diagnosed?
- medical history
- arthrograms
- physical examination
What are common location of tendinitis?
- Achilles–overuse, overtraining, biomechanical malalignments
- Patellar–jumping and downhill running
- Iliotibial–overtraining, biomechanics of foot and heel
- Biceps
How is tendinitis treated?
- RICES
- anti-inflammatories
- orthotics
- physical therapy
- surgery
What are characteristics of polymyalgia rheumatica?
- diffuse pain and stiffness affecting shoulder and pelvic girdle musculature
- diagnosis difficult
- severe disability can result
- gradual onset with subtle symptoms
- women 2x more likely than men
- white women more than other races
- unknown cause
What are the symptoms of polymalgia rheumatica?
- usually bilateral and symmetrical
2. pain and stiffness are the primary problems
How is polymalgia rheumatica diagnosed?
clinical examination
How is polymalagia rheumatica treated?
- injections of pressure points
2. sustained manual pressure
