Osteology Of The Pelvis Flashcards
How many bones make up the pelvis and what are they?
4
2 innominate bones
Sacrum
Coccyx
What are the different parts to the innominate bone?
Ischium
Ilium
Pubis
Which parts make up the linea terminalis?
Arcuate line
Pectineal line
Pubic crest
What is the sacral promontory?
Anterior superior projection of the 1st sacral vertebra into the pelvic cavity
Describe a good pelvis for childbirth
Gynecoid pelvis
Round inlet, straight side wells, ischial spines not too prominent, well rounded greater sciatic notch, well-curved sacrum and sub-pubic arch >90
What is the false pelvis?
The greater pelvis
Superior to the linea terminalis
Accommodates the growing foetus
What is the true pelvis?
Lesser pelvis
Bony canal
Solid and immobile
What is the pelvic inlet?
Maximum distance anterior to posterior
What is the bispinous diameter?
Between the 2 ischial spines
What is the pelvic outlet?
Distance between the ischial tuberosities
What is the obstetric conjugate?
The absolute diameter
Sacral promontory to mid point of pubic symphysis
Cannot palpate this clinically so must use diagonal conjugate
What is the diagonal conjugate?
Approximate of obstetric conjugate
Sacral promontory to inferior border of pubic symphysis
Marginally an overestimation
What are the 2 main ligaments of the pelvis?
Sacrospinous lig
Sacrotuberous lig
How does the pelvic outlet stretch in pregnancy?
Lots of progesterone and relaxin released
Soften the CTs
Additional stretch added to the pelvic outlet
What do we call the most female and male looking pelvises?
Male = android Female = gynecoid
