What is the clinical term for heavy periods?
Menorrhagia
Give some causes of menorrhagia
Abnormal clotting
Fibroids
Cancer
What are fibroids?
Benign growths found in/on uterus
Can occur in several locations
Often present with just very heavy periods
Sometimes can mimic a pregnancy or tumour because so large
What is dysfunctional uterine bleeding?
Menorrhagia but no recognisable pelvic pathology, pregnancy or bleeding disorder has been found
Diagnosis of exclusion
60% of pts with menorrhagia diagnosed with this
How might we view an endometrial cancer?
USS first
Hysteroscopic view
Pelvic MRI
What is endometrial ablation?
Using a laser to burn lining of endometrium
Thin layer and reduce the amount of bleeding
Some people need repeats of treatment
What is the impact of menstrual disorders?
Tiredness, anaemia
Depression, irritability, mood swings, anxiety
Impact on ability to socialise, play sports etc
