Osteoarthritis Flashcards
what is arthritis?
joint pain
what is arthralgia?
sensation of pain
which joints are affected by OA?
small joints of fingers, knees hip, spines
what is Bouchard’s nodes?
they are bumps on proximal interphalanges joints
what is heberden’s nodes
bumps on distal interphalanges joints
what are osteophytes?
bone spurs
what is subchondral sclerosis?
cartilage ulceration
is OA inflammatory or non inflammatory?
non
what is the recommended management for OA?
panadol+ NSAIDs
weight loss, physical therapy, support
joint replacement
no need PO steroids
can inject intra articular steroids or hyaluronic acid
risk factors for OA:
age above 65, female, joint trauma, family hx, obesity
does OA have morning stiffness? how long?
yes, less than 30 minutes
what are the typical symptoms of RA?
advanced symmetrical involvement of the joints of hands ( proximal interphalangeal and metacarpophalangeal joints. ) cartilage loss+ bone erosion.
what are the risk factors of RA?
HLA-DL4 gene
smoking
pathophysiology of RA
gene: failure of tolerance and unregulated lymphocyte activation.
smoking: alter protein to form antigens that trigger immune system to produce autoantibodies. Rhematoid factor and anti CCP . this results in synoviocyte activation, cytokine production and inflammation. thus destruction of cartilage and bones
what is felty syndrome?
neutropenia, splenomegaly
