what is peptic ulcer disease?
open sores that develop on stomach lining/ small intestines that can lead to perforation and bleeding.
How does the body help to protect the stomach lining ?
1) Mucus
- secreted by cells in the mucosa and coats the lining
2) Bicarbonate
- secreted by epithelial cells of GI & neutralizes the acid.
3) Adequate blood supply
- nourish the mucosa
4) Prostaglandin
- stimulate bicarb and mucus production.
which group of drugs should u avoid if u have Peptic ulcer disease?
NSAID, they suppress the production of prostaglandin
What types of GI bleeding are there
hematemesis
melena
hematochezia
hematemesis
blood stained stools or coffee ground emesis
usually bleeding at ligament of treitz, duodenum and jejunum
melena
tarry stools- UGIT bleed
