What is the definition of cellulitis?
Bacterial infection of the inner layers ( dermis and subcutaneous fats) of the skin. Tends to spread
What are the common bacterial that causes cellulitis?
Streptococci, staphylococcus Aureus
What are the factors for skin breakdown?
1) insect/ animal bite
2) tattoos
3) Rashes, eczema
4) recent surgery
5) athlete’s foot
6) injection/ IV
7) Pregnancy
8) DM ( compromised immunity)
9) Burns/ boils
Explain the Pathophysiology of cellulitis
1) bacteria enters through skin
2) bacteria spread rapidly in deep layers of skin
3) spread via entering lymph nodes and blood stream.
What are the characteristics of purulent cellulitis?
It is associated with drainage/ exudate.
Drainable abscess may not be present
What is an abscess?
Canty filled with pus resulting from bacterial infection.
May or may not have cellulitis
