AKI Flashcards
Is AKI reversible?
Yes
What Is AKI? How long does it take to develop?
Acute kidney injury,
Sudden episode of kidney failure within few hours- days
Build up of waste products in the blood and fluid imbalance in the body.
What are the normal levels of creatinine in males and females? (mg/dL)
Male: 0.6-1.2mg/dL
Female: 0.5-1.1mg/dL
What is the creatinine indicative of?
It indicates how well the kidneys are able to filter
What abnormalities will you observe in the lab test/ IO, And the value
1) increase in serum creatinine
- more than 0.3mg/dL
OR 50% increase from their baseline
2) reduced urine output
- less than 0.5ml/kg/hr for more than 6 hours.
What are the causes of AKI? 8
1) hypotension- poor blood perfusion to kidneys
2) Burns - cause fluid shifting thus leading to edema
3) dehydration - reduced perfusion
4) hemorrhage
5) injury
6) septic shock - reduced oxygen- organ failure
7) serious illness
8) surgery
What are the signs and symptoms of AKI?
1) edema
2) fatigue
3) confusion
4) SOB
5) nausea
6) chest pain
What causes pre renal AKI?
-reduced renal perfusion
- increased protein breakdown- overwhelm the system eg. GI bleed ( Hb is protein)
What causes intra renal ?
Damage kidney due to drug/ smth toxic consumed
Example: long standing HTN
Glomerulonephritis
Tubular neurosis
