osmosis Flashcards
what is the definition of osmosis
osmosis is the diffusion of water from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane
In a dilute solution such as a dilute sugar solution, we have a lot of water
what does this mean?
that dilute solutions contain a high concentration of water
in a concentrated sugar solution, we don’t have a lot of water
what would this mean?
concentrated solutions contain a low concentration of water.
what do partially permeable membranes do?
partially permeable membranes allow some molecules to pass through but not all molecules.
placing a partially permeable membrane between a dilute solution and a concentrated sugar solution does what?
this allows water molecules to pass through but not sugar molecules
if we have a higher concentration of water in the dilute solution on the left hand side and a lower concentration of water on the right hand side being split by a partially permeable membrane,
explain the exchanges of concentration between the two.
the water diffuses from the left and side to the right hand side.
osmosis is simply the diffusion of water.
what is the simple definition of osmosis
osmosis is the diffusion of water
The cytoplasm of cells is a concentrated solution that contains a low concentration of water, what happens if we place this cell in water?
osmosis will take place. water will move by osmosis from outside the cell to inside the cell
in the case of an animal cell, what will the water moving in do?
the water moving into an animal cell will cause the cell to expand. the cell could even burst.
what happens when we place an animal cell in a very concentrated solution?
water will move out by osmosis and the cell will shrink
what happens when we place a plant cell in water?
the water will move into the cell by osmosis and the cell will expand
how does the cell wall prevent the plant cell from bursting when placed in water?
the cell becomes swollen, scientists call this turgid.
what happens when we place a plant in a concentrated solution?
what does this cause the plant cell to do?
what do we call this?
water moves out of the plant cell by osmosis
this causes the cell to shrink. scientists say that the cell has become flaccid
what is a partially/semi permeable membrane?
A membrane that is permeable to the small molecules of water and certain solutes but does not allow the passage of large solute molecules.
