microscopy Flashcards
when were early light microscopes invented?
hundreds of years ago
what type of microscopes have been used a lot frequently over the years?
light microscopes
what is the main job of a microscope
to allow us to magnify and discover important structures of cells such as the nucleus
what does it mean for microscopes to magnify?
the image that they produce is a lot bigger than the actual real life object
name 2 problems using a light microscope
1.they have a limited magnification, we cannot easily see all structures inside a nucleus this is because
their magnification is not powerful enough
- they have limited resolution, the image is blurred, even if we increase the magnification we’d still get a blurred image and unable to see fine detail this is because the resolution is limited
why do scientists use an electron microscope
scientists discovered that if they wanted to explore structures inside cells in detail, a light microscope is not suitable, an electron microscope allows them to see tiny structures inside the cell/ nucleus
name the advantages of an electron microscope
much greater magnification and resolution than light microscopes
Using the equation size of image/ size of real object = magnification
use a ruler to measure the image size of the nucleus in mm
the image size is 45mm
the diameter of the real nucleus is 0.01mm
calculate the magnification.
4500x
magnification= size of image/size of real object
magnification= 45mm/0.01mm
magnification=4500x
measure the length of the mitochondrion when the image size is 30mm and the size of real object is 0.003mm.
10,000x
magnification= size of image/size of real object
magnification=30mm/0.003mm
= 10,000x
the cell shown is measured by a ruler (87mm)
the magnification is 2000x
calculate the real size of the cell in mm
0.0435mm
real size of object= image size/magnification
real size of object= 87mm/2000x
0.0435mm
What is the triangle equation for magnification?
I
A M
actual size x magnification = image size
