osmosis Flashcards
What is water potential?
pressure created by the water molecules.
what is the water potential of pure water?
0.
What happens when the solute concentration increases?
The solutions water potential decreases.
what happens when the solute concentration, decreases?
The solutions water potential increases.
what is the full definition of osmosis?
The net movement of water moleules from a region of high water potential, to a region of low water potential, through a partially permeable membrane.
what form of transport is osmosis? and explain why it is that.
- A passive form of transport.
- this means it doesnt require ATP from respiration.
What happens when an animal cell has a water potential lower than its sorroundings?
It will gain water by osmosis, and then burst.
What happens when a plant cell has a water potential lower than its sorroundings?
It will gain water by osmosis, however, it wont burst, due to its cell wall.
We say it becomes turgid.
what happens when an animals cell water potential, is higher than its sorroundings?
the cell will lose water, thus causing it to shrievel up.
what happens when a plants cell water potential, is higher than its sorroundings?
the plant cell will undergo plasmolysis ( the process by which a plant cell shrievels up).
We say the plant cell is now a plasmolysed cell.
what happens when a plant cell, and an animal cell, have THE SAME water potential, as its sorroundings?
The cell remains unchanged.
