ATP Flashcards
State all the three components of a typical ATP molecule.
- Adenine.
- ribose.
- phosphate
what does ATP stand for?
Adenosine triphosphate.
Explain how ATP is made.
ATP is made through a condensation reaction, between a molecule of ADP, and an inorganic phosphate group.
what enzyme is used in the production of ATP?
ATP synthase.
How does ATP synthesis occur in plants?
It occurs in the chloroplasts, during photosynthesis.
How does ATP synthesis occur in animals?
It occurs in the mitochondria, during respiration.
What are the two main roles of ATP?
- As a surce of energy, for faciliating energy requiring reactions.
- Usefull as a source of inorganic phosphate, which phospholyates other compounds in the cell, to make them more reactive.
describe how ATP is broken down.
ATP will form ADP and a phosphate ion (Pi) + energy.
It does this by a hydrolisis reaction, meaning it requires water.
which enzyme is being used when breaking down ATP?
ATP hydrolase.
