Osmosis Flashcards
what is Osmosis
the movement of water through the cell membrane
what does it mean if the ICF is hypertonic,
what direction will osmosis go
the ICF has less solution than the ECF so the cell will shrivel up
- ECF to ICF
What does it mean if the ICF is isotonic,
what is the direction will osmosis go
the cell is at its optimum stage, the ICF and ECF have the same concentration/amount of solution, so no movement of water
What does it mean if the ICF is Hypotonic.
What direction with osmosis go
the cell is too full and will explode
osmosis will go from ICF to ECF
describe what resting membrane potential
at rest, the intracellular space has more negative charges than the extracellular space which results in a ‘electrical gradient’
