What are the three categories of orthodontic treatment?
Preventative
Interceptive

What is preventive orthodontic treatment?
Control caries to prevent premature tooth loss
Space maintainers
Correct functional habits
Early diagnosis to make sure primary teeth are not blocking permanent teeth
What is interceptive orthodontic treatment?
Prevent or correct problems as they are developing
Possibly remove permanent teeth, usually first preMolar
Palatal expander
Headgear
What is corrective orthodontic treatment?
Using all methods of correction
Removable appliances like Invisalign
Fixed appliances like braces
Indications for orthodontic treatment
Malocclusion Dentinofacial deformities TMJ issues Difficulty chewing Speech problems Decay caused by overcrowding Aesthetics
Contraindications for treatment
Improper bone support Rampant caries Poor health Poor oral hygiene Allergy to metal brackets
What will treatment accomplish?
Fix: crowded teeth Overjet Overbite Open bite Spaces etc.
What is normal occlusion (class I)
All maxillary teeth are in maximum contact with mandibular teeth
What is malocclusion
Any deviation from class I
Class one occlusion
Mesiobuccal Cusp of the permanent maxillary first molar of clothes in the buccal groove of the permanent mandibular first molar
Class II occlusion
Mesiobuccal cusp of the permanent maxillary first molar occludes half a cusp mesially to the buckle groove of the permanent mandibular first molar
Class III occlusion
Mesiobuccal cusp of the permanent maxillary first molar includes half a cusp distally to the buccal groove of the permanent mandibular first molar
