Dental Dam And Tofflemire Retainer Flashcards
What is a dental dam
Away or method to isolate teeth that are going to be restored. Can be used on almost any patient. Applied by the dentist hygienist or dental assistant after the patient has had anesthesia
Check for latex allergies
Characteristics of a dental dam frame
Can be plastic or metal
U-shaped- U frame
Ostby frame- oval shaped frame
Used to hold the dental dam material
Factors to consider when punching the dental dam
Arch shape, teeth to be isolated, identify the anchor tooth and location of holes.
Size and spacing of holes (leave 3 to 3 1/2 mm of space between each punch)
Maxillary colon punch 1 inch from the top of the dam
Mandibular: punch 2 inches from the lower edge of the dam
Parts of the dental clamp
Bow: rounded portion, extends through the dam material and is always toward the distal
Jaws: shaped into four prongs and must be secure on the tooth.
Damn forceps fit into the forceps holes and allow for placement and removal of clamp
What are the dental dam clamps made of and what do they do
-Made of nickel plated steel or chrome
It is the anchor and stabilizes the dam
-The anchor tooth is usually one tooth distal to the tooth being restored
-can either be winged or wingless
Always tie a piece of floss to it for safety so the patient does not swallow it if it pops off
What is the matrix band
Metal or plastic band that provides and takes the place of the proximal tooth surface that was removed. It will restore the proximal contours and contact to their normal shape and function
Can be called band or retainer
What is the tofflemire retainer
Device that holds the matrix band in position
What are the components of the tofflemire retainer
Outer knob Inner knob Spindle Diagonal slot Guide slots
What are matrix Band maid of
Flexible stainless steel and are available in premolar, molar, and universal sizes and thicknesses
Which part of the matrix band Is placed toward the gingiva
The smaller circumference of the band is the gingival edge and is always placed toward the gingiva
Larger end is called the occlusal edge
What is a wedge
Either triangular or around and made of wood or plastic
Inserted into the lingual embrasure to position the matrix band firmly against the gingival margin of the prep
Helps with overhangs
What is an auto metric system
Alternative to a universal retainer. No retainer is used to hold the band in place, they are already formed into circles in assorted sizes And have a coil like auto lock loop that is tightened with a wrench
What is a T band
T-shaped copper band used on primary teeth. One formed, the top portion of the T allows the straight portion to adjust and fit the circumference of the primary molar
What is a plastic matrix
Also referred to as a celluloid matrix or mylar strip. Used with composite resin‘s or glass ionomer materials for class three and four restorations in which the proximal wall of an anterior tooth is missing
When is a clear matrix placed
Placed enter proximally before the etching and priming of a tooth. Protects adjacent teeth from the etching materials
