Orientations Flashcards
How well do you know your medical orientations?
Sagittal Plane
The plane that cuts the body vertically and forwards/backwards
Transverse Plane
The plane that cuts the body horizontally (left-right) and forwards/backwards
Coronal / Frontal Plane
The plane that cuts the body vertically and horizontally (left-right)
Medial Direction
Perpendicularly towards the sagittal plane, towards the plane that cuts the body to left and right
Lateral Direction
Perpendicularly away from sagittal plane, away from the plane that cuts the body to left and right
Anterior
Front of the frontal/coronal plane, also forwards
Posterior
Back of the frontal/coronal plane, also backwards
Superior
Upper body, also up direction
Inferior
Lower body, also down direction
Standard Orientation
Looking either from the feet up (CT) or from front of the body (radiograph). Thus patient’s left is doctor’s right.
