Stress
Experience of threat that people perceive as important and unavoidable
Aspects of stress
1) - can be experienced as changes of threat
- or chances of opportunity
2) an event needs ti be important for a person–> then it creates stress
3) stress evokes out of uncertainty ( because people do not know how to deal with opportunities and threats)
4) experiencing stress depends on how you handle opportunities and threats
What effects how individuals react to stress?
Personality: high neuroticism, type A personality increase levels of stress
Skills: hight stress when employees do not have skills for work
Stress and work
Can effect employees physically or mentally.
Positive stress increase performance
Five important potential stressors
1) Personal stressor ( life events)
2) Work related stress
3) Group and organizational stressor ( stress due to misunderstanding, conflict or personal differences in the group)
4) Organizing work life balance
5) Environmental uncertanity ( terrorist attacks, pollution etc. )
Role conflict
- when behavior to task that one must perform are in conflict with each other (of the causes of stress)
Role ambiguity
When one do not know what is expected of them and how they are suppose to do their work
Ways of coping with stress
Problem focus coping and emotion-focus coping
Problem focus coping
- people that directly take the source of stress
Emotion-focus coping
- people that control their negative feelings
