Organisation - Enzymes. Flashcards
1
Q
What is a catalyst?
A
Something that speeds up a reaction.
2
Q
What is an enzyme?
A
A biological catalyst.
3
Q
What are enzymes made up of?
A
Proteins
4
Q
How many chains do amino acids make up?
A
3
5
Q
What is an active site?
A
Where reactions take place.
6

Fill in the gaps:
Starch -
Proteins -
Lipids -
A
Glucose
Amino acids
Fatty acids and glycerol
7
Q
How would you test for sugars?
A
- Ground up sample
- Place in test tube and add Benedict’s solution.
-Put test tube in boiling water. - Wait 5 minutes
- Positive : brick red
Negative : stays blue.
8
Q
How do you test for starch?
A
- Place ground sample in spotting tile
- Add 2-3 drops of iodine
- Poistive : blue/black
Negative : stays brown or yellow.
9
Q
How do you test for lipids?
A
- Fill test tube 1/4 with sample
-Add ethanol to cover it
-Swirl tube to mix - Add distilled water and mix again
- Positive : cloudy white or milky
Negative : does not
10
Q
How do you test for proteins?
A
- Place sample in test tube
- Add 5-6 drops of Biuret solution
- Positive : violet
11
Q
What are the 3 digestive solution?
A
Protease, amaylase and lipease.
12
Q
What is denaturing?
A
When the chains unravel which changes the shape of protein so the substrate will no longer fit in the active site.
