Cells - Chromosomes and Mitosis Flashcards
What is a gene?
A gene is a section of DNA that codes for a specific characteristic e.g your eye colour.
Define haploid and diploid.
Haploid - one copy of each chromosome.
Diploid - two copies of each chromosome.
What is mitosis?
Process by which a cell divides.
List the different stages of mitosis
Interphase ( cell growth), prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase.
What happens in interphase?
Cell grows - DNA copied - 2 copies of each chromosome.
All organelle double.
What happens in prophase?
Chromosomes condense - shorten and thicken.
What happens in metaphase?
Chromosomes line up down the equator of the cell.
What happens in anaphase?
Chromosomes pulled apart to the poles of the cell.
What happens in telophase?
Cell splits in 2 - daughter cells.
