Name the parts of the digestive system.
Mouth, oesophagus, pancreas, gall bladder, liver, stomach, large intestine, small intestine and anus.
What is the function of the mouth (salivary glands)?
Mechanical digestion - teeth
Chemical digestion - saliva.
What is the oesophagus?
Muscular tube which moves the food to the stomach.
What is the function of the pancreas?
Produces digestive enzymes.
What is the function of the gall bladder?
Stores bile.
What is the function of the liver?
Produces bile.
What is the purpose of the large intestine?
Absorbs water into the bloodstream.
What is the stomach?
Muscular bag that churns food - mechanical.
Contains hydrochloric acid - chemical.
What is the purpose of the small intestine?
Food mixes with enzymes and bile to be broken down. Absorbs nutrients into bloodstream.
What is the function of the anus?
Where the faeses leave the body.
What does bile do?
Emulsifies fats and neutralises stomach acid.
