Organ Systems and their Function Flashcards
The 11 organ systems are ______
Integumentary , Skeletal, Muscular, Nervous, Cardiovascular, Respiratory,
Endocrine, Lymphatic, Digestive, Urinary, Reproductive
The integumentary system __________
Forms the external body covering (skin)
Protects deeper tissue from injury
Helps regulate body temperature
Location of cutaneous nerve receptors
The Skeletal system _______
Consists of bones, cartilages, ligaments, and joints
Supports the body
Provides muscle attachment for movement
Site of blood cell formation (hematopoiesis)
Stores minerals
The Muscular system _______
Skeletal muscles contract or shorten
Produces movement of bones
Note: not responsible for the movement of blood through the body or substances through the digestive / urinary system
The Nervous System
Fast-acting control system
Consists of brain, spinal cord, nerves, and sensory receptors
Responds to internal and external change
Sends messages via nerve impulses to central nervous system
Central nervous system activates effectors (muscles and glands)
Endocrine System
Contains many glands Secretes regulatory hormones Growth Reproduction Metabolism
Cardiovascular System
Includes heart and blood vessels Heart pumps blood Vessels transport blood to tissues Transports materials in body via blood pumped by heart Oxygen and carbon dioxide Nutrients Wastes
Lymphatic System
Includes lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, and lymphoid organs
Returns leaked fluids back to blood vessels
Cleanses the blood
Involved in immunity
Respiratory System
Includes the nasal passages, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs
Supplies blood with oxygen
Removes carbon dioxide
Digestive System
Includes the oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, and accessory organs
Breaks down food
Allows for nutrient absorption into blood
Eliminates indigestible material as feces
Urinary System
Includes the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra
Eliminates nitrogenous wastes
Maintains acid-base balance
Regulates water and electrolytes
Male reproductive system
For males, includes the testes, scrotum, penis, accessory glands, and duct system
Testes produce sperm
Duct system carries sperm to exterior
Female reproductive system
For females, includes the ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus, and vagina
Ovaries produce eggs
Uterus provides site of development for fetus
