Muscles and their functions Flashcards
Frontalis (facial muscle)
raises eyebrows
Orbicularis oculi
closes eyes, squints, blinks, winks
facial muscle
Orbicularis oris
closes mouth and portrudes the lips
facial muscle
Buccinator
flattens the cheeks, chews
facial muscle
Zygomaticus )
raises corners of the mouth
facial muscle
Masseter
Closes jaw and elevates mandible
chewing muscles
Temporalis
synergest of the masseter, closes jaw
chewing muscles
Platysma (neck muscles)
Platysma – pulls the corners of the mouth inferiorly
Sternocleidomastoid (neck muscles)
flexes the neck, rotates the head
Pectoralis major
Pectoralis major - adducts and flexes the humerus
Intercostal muscles –
Intercostal muscles – movement of rib cage for breathing
Rectus abdominis
Rectus abdominis - flexes vertebral column and compresses abdominal contents (defecation, childbirth, forced breathing)
External and internal obliques
flex vertebral column; rotate trunk and bend it laterally
Transversus abdominis
compresses abdominal contents
Trapezius
elevates, depresses, adducts, and stabilizes the scapula
Latissimus dorsi
extends and adducts the humerus
Erector spinae
back extension
Quadratus lumborum
flexes the spine laterally
Deltoid
- arm abduction
because of the size of the deltoid, it is a favorite site for injections of small amounts (less than 5 mL)
Biceps brachii
flexes elbow
anterior muscle of the upper limb
Brachialis
elbow flexion
anterior muscle of the upper limb
Brachioradialis -
weak muscle for elbow flexion
anterior muscle of the upper limb)
Triceps brachii - elbow extension (antagonist to biceps brachii)
Triceps brachii - elbow extension (antagonist to biceps brachii)
(only posterior muscle of the upper limb. Biceps brachii, brachialis, brachioradialis are all anterior muscle)
Gluteus maximus
hip extension (muscle of the lower limb)
Gluteus medius
hip abduction (muscle of the lower limb)
Iliopsoas
hip flexion
muscle of the lower limb
Adductor muscles
adduct the thighs
muscle of the lower limb
Sartorius
flexes the thigh
muscle of the lower limb
Hamstring group - thigh extension and knee flexion
Biceps femoris
Semimembranosus
Semitendinosus
Extend leg and flex the knee
Quadriceps group - extends the knee
Rectus femoris (also flexes hip) Vastus muscles (three) Vastus lateralis Vastus intermedius Vastus medialis
Tibialis anterior
dorsiflexion
Gastrocnemeus
plantar flexion (and weak knee flexor)
Soleus
plantar flexion
Extensor
Extensors are muscle types that cause extension, which increases the angle of the joint, thus moving two bones farther apart.
A tissue with striations and many flattened nuclei under the plasma membrane in each cell would be called _______.
Skeletal muscle
