upper border runs from 7th ICS on right mid-axillary line, to 5th ICS on midclavicular line, to xiphosternal joint on midline to the 5th costal cartilage on the left midclavicular line;
lower border runs from 11th ICS on right mid-axillary line across lower border of costal arch to costocartilage joint of the 8th and 9th ribs to 3 cm below xyphoid process

can extend below costal line if enlarged
