Lab Results Flashcards
CBC evaluates
blood and general health
asymptomatic HIV positive patients should have a CBC done every
6 months
symptomatic HIV patients should have a CBC at least every
3 months
CBC measures
RBC, WBC, hemoglobin, hematocrit, three red cell indices, white cell differential
platelet counts sometimes included in CBC
RBC count is
number of RBCs in cubic millilitre of blood
person w/ significantly low RBC will have sx of
fatigue, shortness of breath, pallor
decrease in RBC usually causes decrease in
hemoglobin and hematocrit values
WBC count is
number of WBCs in cubic millilitre of blood
reasons WBC count might be low
certain medications decrease WBC count in bone marrow
minor viral infections
stress
opportunistic infections
function of hemoglobin
carries oxygen to tissues via RBC
any drug which causes suppression of bone marrow will decrease the level of
hemoglobin
hematocrit is the
percent of cellular components in blood to the fluid or blood plasma
best lab test to indicate anemia
hematocrit
decrease in hematocrit is always seen w/ decrease in
hemoglobin
most important of the RBC indices
MCV (mean cell volume)
MCV measures
average size of RBC
platelets are necessary for
blood clot formation
used in developing fibrin clot (scab)
white cell differential counts
100 white cells and differentiates them by type
3 main types of WBCs in white cell differential count
polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs)
lymphocytes
monocytes
PMNs ______ during bacterial infections
increase
lymphocytes _______ during viral infections
decrease
increased monocytes are sometimes seen during
chronic infections
normal cholesterol range
150-250 mg/dL
normal blood pressure
120/80 mmHg
prehypertension blood pressure range
120-139/80-89 mmHg
stage 1 hypertension range
140-159/90-99 mmHg
stage 2 hypertension range
160 or higher/100 or higher mmHg
amylase is secreted by the
mouth and pancreas
amylase can be an early warning sign of
acute pancreatitis
CPK is found in the
brain and muscles
causes of increase in CPK
strenuous exercise or heart attack
liver function tests (5)
SGOT SGPT alkaline phosphate total bilirubin LDH
tests to measure kidney function
BUN (amount of urea nitrogen in blood)
creatinine
lymphocytes are mainly broken down into
T and B cells
