Orbit, Eyelids and Lacrimal system Flashcards
Superior Orbital Fissure separates:
greater and lesser wings of sphenoid bone
SOF transmits
- CN 3, 4, 6, cranial division of 5
- sympathetic nerve fibers
- superior ophthalmic vein
Nasolacrimal Canal houses
nasolacrimal duct, which allows tears to drain nasally
Nasolacrimal Canal runs from
lacrimal sac to inferior meatus of nose
7 layers of eyelid
- skin and subQ tissue
- muscles of protraction
- orbital septum
- orbital fat
- muscles of retraction
- tarsus
- conjunctiva
Muscles of protraction
- Orbicularis oculi
2. innerv by Cranial Nerve VII
Orbital septum
- Thin multilayered fibrous tissue
2. Protective against infection and trauma
upper eyelid, muscles of retraction
- levator muscle
2. superior tarsal muscle
lower eyelid: muscles of retraction
- inferior tarsal muscle
2. capsulopalpebral fascia
tarsus
dense plate of c.t
conjunctiva
extends from orbit to cover interior of eyelid
Lacrimal canaliculi:
- Aka ducts
2. Small channels in each eyelid which conduct tears
Lacrimal Puncta:
Minute orifices where the lacrimal canaliculi commence
Meibomian Glands
- Specialized sebaceous gland in the eyelid
2. Oily substance prevents rapid tear evaporation
lacrimal gland is located
in superior, lateral portion of each orbit
lacrimal gland secretes
aqueous portion of tears
glands of zeiss
- specialized sebaceous glands that service the eyelashes
2. located on margin of eyelid
Whitnall’s Ligament
- Support ligament for upper eyelid and superior orbit
2. Improves efficiency of levator
Muller Muscle
- Helps raise upper eyelid
2. Smooth muscle adjoining levator
Lockwood’s Ligament
- Supports eye inferiorly and prevents downward displacement
- Forms hammock below eyeball
Annulus of Zinn:
Ring of fibrous tissue around optic nerve, origin for 5 of the EOM
Primary Blood supply eye
ophthalmic artery (branch of internal carotid)
Secondary blood supply eye
Secondary supply from facial and maxillary arteries (branch of external carotid)
eye: venous drainage
Drained by ophthalmic vein
Anastomoses anteriorly with facial veins and posteriorly with pterygoid plexus
