Tends to be symmetrical white lacey patches affecting the buccal mucosa and tongue
can affect different parts of the body
Autoimmune condition
No symptoms or risk factors
Long term review as potential malignant condition
Lichen planus
what condition is this?
Seen when in contact with metal in the mouth e.g. amalgam, crowns, dentures
Can look similar to lichen planus
Can be painful

Fungal infection
Tend to be at the commissure (corners of mouth) sometimes the tongue
Treatment systemic antifungals
If signs don’t resolve have a repeat biopsy after 2 weeks
candidiasis

Potentially malignant lesion

Remove with ? margin of normal tissue as premalignant

Seen in immunocompromised hosts
Linked to Epstein-Barr virus and HIV
Don’t need to excise, eliminate risk factors
