Oral Cavity Flashcards
What makes up the lateral walls of the oral cavity?
Buccinator
What structure forms the diaphragm of the mouth?
Mylohyoid
Attachment sites for geniohyoid and genioglossus
Geniohyoid - inferior genial tubercle of mandible
Genioglossus - superior genial tubercle
list the supra hyoid muscles
Geniohyoid
Mylohyoid
Anterior and
Posterior belly of digastric
Stylohyoid
Which suprahyoid muscles are innervated by the facial nerve?
Posterior belly of digastric
Stylohyoid
Lie either side of stylomastoid foramen where facial nerve passes
Which supra hyoid muscles are innervated by CNV3?
Anterior belly of digastric
Mylohyoid
Innervation of geniohyoid?
C1 in hypoglossal
this is because geniohyoid sits close to hypoglossal nerve
Innervation of sublingual salivary gland
Facial CN VII
Innervation of parotid gland?
Glossopharyngeal (IX)
Innervation of submandibular saliva glands?
Facial CN VII
Sensory supply to anterior 2/3rd of tongue?
Lingual nerve
- branch of CNV3
Taste fibres also carried by lingual but originate from facial and travel on chorda tympani
Motor supply to tongue?
Hypoglossal nerve
What is responsible for bumpy appearance on posterior 3rd of tongue
lingual tonsil
what lymphoid tissue protects the nasopharynx?
Adenoid tonsils
Action and innervation of intrinsic muscles of the tongue?
mould food bolus
Hypoglossal CN XII
Name and give the action of the extrinsic muscles of the tongue?
Genioglossus
- Depresses tongue
Palatoglossus
- Elevates tongue
Styloglossus
- Elevates and retracts tongue
Hyoglossus
- Depresses tongue
What is the innervation of the extrinsic muscles of the tongue?
Hypoglossal except palatoglossus which is CN X
Blood supply and venous drainage of tongue
Lingual artery
- 2nd ant branch of external carotid
Lingual vein
- communicates with internal jugular vein
Describe the lymphatic drainage of the tongue?
Tip = Submental nodes
Lateral edge = submandibular nodes
Central and posterior = deep cervical nodes
What is the mucosa of the hard palate innervated by?
Facial nerve CN VII
Blood supply to hard palate?
greater palatine artery
- branch of 3rd part of maxillary
Innervation of hard palate?
Branches of CN V2
CN V2 only sensory
Greater palatine
Innervation of soft palate
Lesser palatine
- Branch of greater palatine (CNV2) that passes posteriorly to supply soft palate
Also CN IX
Name the muscles that move the soft palate.
Tensor veli palatini
Levator veli palatini
Palatoglossus
Palatopharyngeus
Musculus uvulae
Innervation of muscles that move soft palate?
All CN X except tensor veli palatini
Innervation of tensor veli palatini
CN V3
Which muscle wraps its tendon around pterygoid hamulus?
Tensor veli palatini
Action of the soft palate muscles?
Tensor veli palatini - tenses soft palate
Levator veli palatini - elevates soft palate
palatoglossus - elevates tongue and helps close oral cavity from oropharynx
Palatopharyngeus - elevates pharynx and moves pharyngeal wall forwards towards the soft palate
Musculus uvulae - elevates and retracts uvula
Lymphatic drainage of soft palate?
Deep cervical nodes
How does the facial nerve supply small glands of the palate?
Facial nerve sends fibres to pterygopalatine ganglion via the greater petrosal nerve which then joins CN V2
Describe an edentulous mandible.
When teeth are los the alveolar bone that supported the teeth is absorbed –> reduced bone in that area.
if all teeth are lost then the forces that normally pass from the teeth during mastication is lost so all supporting alveolar bone is lost
Nerve supply to teeth and gums?
Branches of CN V2 supply upper, CN V3 (mental branch) supplies lower teeth and gums
blood supply to teeth and gums?
alveolar branches of maxillary artery
