Nasal Cavity Flashcards
Describe the cartilages of external nose
Septal cartilage separates 2 nostrils
Alar cartilage forms shape of nostrils
What muscle lies over the bridge of the nose?
Nasalis
Blood supply to nose
Ant and post ethmoidal
- Branches of ophthalmic
Sphenopalatine and greater palatine from maxillary
Septal branch
- from superior labial
- lateral nasal from facial
Innervation of bridge of nose?
CN V1
Innervation of ala?
Alae innervated by nasal branches of infraorbital nerve (CNV2)
Which bones form the concha?
Superior and middle = ethmoid bone
Inferior concha = individual bone
Describe the medial wall of the nasal cavity
perpendicular plate of ethmoid makes up bony septum
vomer, palatine and maxilla = inferior septum
Where is the auditory tube located?
Nasopharynx
Which recess is found above superior concha?
Sphenoethmoidal recess
What type of epithelium lines the nasal cavity?
Ciliated respiratory epithelium
Where does the frontal sinus open up into?
Middle meatus via ethmoidal infundibulum into semilunar hiatus
Where does maxillary sinus open into?
Middle meatus via maxillary osmium into semilunar hiatus
Where does ethmoidal sinus open into?
Anterior and middle air cells = middle meatus via infundibulum or direct
Posterior ethmoidal air cells = superior meatus
Where does sphenoid sinus drain to?
Directly into sphenoethmoidal recess
Describe the innervation of the paranasal sinuses?
Frontal = Supraorbital (CNV1)
Sphenoidal = Posterior ethmoidal (CNV1)
Ethmoidal = Nasocilliary (CNV1)
Maxillary = Superior alveolar (CNV2)
