Cranial Nerves/Fossa Flashcards
Bones of anterior cranial fossa
frontal, ethmoid, sphenoid
Bones of middle cranial fossa
Sphenoid, temporal
Bones of posterior cranial fossa
Temporal and occipital bones
What passes through foramen oval?
CN V3
Otic ganglion
Accessory meningeal artery
Lesser petrosal nerve
Emissary veins
What carries the middle meningeal artery?
Foramen spinosusm
Describe the route of the internal carotid
Enters cranium through carotid canal.
Then enters foramen lacerum but does not pass all the way through.
ICA then lies either side of sphenoid and enters cavernous sinus before joining circle of willis
Where is the primary olfactory cortex?
Prepiriform area of amygdala
Where do 90% of visual fibres go and where do the remaining 10% go?
90% to lateral geniculate (thalamus) then visual cortex
10% non-geniculate
Nerve supply to stapedius?
Facial
In the petrous temporal bone what branches does the facial nerve send to different areas?
Greater petrosal nerve - lacrimal
Chorda tympani - submandibular and sublingual glands
Describe path of recurrent laryngeal branch of vagus
wraps around aortic arch on left and around subclavian artery on right
