oral and nasal cavity Flashcards
what is the vestibule
the part of mucosa that attaches the upper lip to the gum of the teeth
where is the oral cavity proper
behind the teeth
what is the uvula innervated by
Vagus CN X- elicits gag refled
pillers at the back of the oral cavity proper and what is in between them
there are two pillars of mucosa, the front one is the palatoglossal arch (goes from the soft palate to the tongue_
the one in the back is the palatopharyngeal arch ( goes from the soft palate to the pharynx). in between the twwo arches is the palatine tonsil. The palatine tonsil is a part of the lymphatic tissue all around the naso pharynx which fights off foreign invaders
oral cavity and other major compartments (sinuses)
Cranial vault contains the brain, external ear, orbis
air filled sinuses: frontal sinus–>embedded in the frontal bone
maxillary sinus–>just under the eye embedded in maxila
oral cavity
nasal cavity
and vestibule
Torus tubaris
where Eustachian tube enters the nasopharynx with middle ear, its an elevated bump of mucosa. Most prevalent in peds. to open you have to open muscles of the soft palate
turbinate bones
nasal conchae that slow down air movement to warm up or cool down the air thats being inhaled
waldeyer’s ring
composed of immunocompetent lymphatic tissue (tonsils and lymph follicles). The tonsils are immunological sentinels surrounding the passageways from the mouth and nasal cavity to the pharynx (the blue dots all over the pharynx in that slide)
the hard palate
made up of two bones: the maxilla anteriorly and the palatine bone posteriorly separated by a suture line,
has an
*incisive foramen that carries nasopalatine nerve and nasopalatine vessels
*greater palatine foramen that carries greater palatine nerve and vessels (serve hard palate)
*lesser palatine foramen that carries lesser palatine nerve and vessels (serve soft palate)
innervation of the maxilla
infraorbital nerve (CN V (v2) has a posterior middle and anterior superior alveolar nerves which: the posterior superior alveolar nerve innervates the posterior 2.5 molars, the anterior sup. alv ne. innervates the first 3 teeth, and the middle alveolar innervates the middle 2.5 (so just remember 3, 2.5, 2.5)
vestibular innervation: kinda the same
muscles of the soft palate
- Tensor veli palatini (V3)
- Levator veli palatini
- usculus uvalae
- Palatoglossis
- Palatopharynges
2-5 innervated by the vagus nerve
hard palate arteries
Greater palatine (maxillary sphenopalatine (maxillary)
Soft palate arteries
lesser palatine arteries (maxillary) ascending palatine (facial) palatine artery (ascending pharyngeal) Dorsal lingual (lingual
muscles of the cheeks
buccinator (CN VII) terminates that the pterygomandibular raphe (anesthesia for inferior alveolar and lingual) then becomes the superior constrictor
innervation of mandible
lingual nerve innervates floor of mouth, inferiot lingual gingiva and anterior 2/3 pf tongue
V3 gives off branches
Buccal branch: vistibule region of the posterior 3 molars
Inferior alveolar mental branch: the rest of the teeth
Inferior alveolar dental branch: posterior 5 teeth
Inferior alveolar Incisive branch: first 3 teeth
