What is the classic triad of symptoms in optic neuritis?
- Visual impairment
- Impaired colour vision
- Pain on eye movements
What are the signs of optic neuritis?
- Positive relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD)
- increased blind spot on visual fields.
- Papillodema
What are the differential diagnoses of optic neuritis?
- posterior scleritis
- Maculopathy
- Retinopathy
- Big blind spot syndrome
What is charcot’s neurological triad of MS?
1) Dysarthria (difficulty or unclear speech)
2) Nystagmus (also loss of vision / optic neuritis - blurring, pain on movement, impaired colour vision / double vision)
3) Intention tremor (also muscle weakness, spasm, tremor, ataxia, paralysis)

Full opthalmological examination
What is the treatment for optic neuritis?
- often just watchful waiting
- IV methylprednisolone hastens visual recovery
