Ops 6220 Dangerous and stray dogs
STRAY DOGS..
PO duties….
1-determine dog is stray
2-if sick or diseased, go to that procedure .
3-Secure dog or notify ESU for assistance to secure dog
4-determine if dog is licensed.
5- consider enforcement if owner is located
6-return dog if licensed and owner located
7- notify desk personnel to notify DOG CONTROL OFFICER if no owner found OR dog not licensed.
8- report disposition of assignment.
OPS 6220 STRAY AND DANGEROUS DOGS
DEFINITIONS-
Dangerous dog-without justification attacks a person and causes injury or death OR poses a serious threat of harm to one or more persons.
Stray dog-any unsecured dog wandering in a public place where no owner or keeper present.
OPS 6220 Dangerous dogs
Duties of PO ….
1-Determine if dog is attacking peaceful person in a lawful place
2-destroy the dog if necessary
3-initiate firearm discharge or animal bite procedures if necessary
4-attempt to identify owner.
5- notify desk personnel to contact dog control officer if dog destroyed,no owner present or to take report for attack.
6- determine if dog has attacked before.
7- secure dog
8-initiate animal bite procedure.
9-determine if dog should be seized.
*should be seized if it is a dangerous dog and not in control of owner OR not on premise of owner. OR dog poses immediate threat to public.
10- notify desk personnel to notify dog control officer to seize dog
11-if dog does not qualify to be seized , desk notifies DCO to take report.
12-assist dog control officer.
13- give disposition of report.

Municipal court orders….
Duties of PO…..
1-receives assignment to assist dog control officer with court order.
2-respond to scene and read court order.
note- people who can seize a dog, PO, peace officer, dog control officer
note-if court rules a dog is dangerous, owner must secure dog permanently. If not , PO, peace officer, DCO can euthanize dog on or off property of owner.
3- assist DCO.
4-report disposition.
