Ophthalmology II Flashcards
is disc edema the same as papilledema?
no
what is papilledema?
IOP causing disc edema
what are the signs of papilledema?
- hyperemia of disc
- tortuosity of vessels
- blurring and elevation of disc
- bilateral
- good vision until chronic
- absence of SVP
what is the etiology of papilledema?
- brain tumors / space occupying lesions
- idiopathic intracranial HTN
- cerebral trauma or hemorrhage
- dural sinus thrombosis
what are the symptoms of idiopathic intracranial HTN (pseudotumor cerebri)?
- cephalgia
- visual obscurations
- pulsatile tinnitus
- horizontal diplopia
- pain on EOM
what are the symptoms of optic neuritis?
- classic afferent pupillary defect
- decreased vision
- color (red) desaturation
what is one major etiology of optic neuritis?
MS
what are the symptoms of papillitis - anterior optic neuritis?
- disc edema, hyperemia, tortuosity
- generally unilateral
- RAPD
- poor vision
what are the symptoms of retrobulbar neuritis?
- NO disc edema
- pain on EOM
- RAPD
is there disc edema with retrobulbar neuritis?
no
how can you tell the difference between papilledema and neuritis?
papilledema - good vision, no pupillary defect
what is the appearance in optic atrophy?
pallor of optic nerve
what is charles bonnet syndrome?
- decreased vision (less than 20/80)
- often ARMD
- visual hallucinations (pleasant)
- patient aware hallucinations are not real
equal pupils but positive RAPD?
unilateral optic nerve lesion
what tests should you do for abnormal optic nerve?
VA and VF
abrupt visual loss of diplopia implies what type of disease?
vascular disease
