Ophthalmic exam (Yr 4) Flashcards
what is the outer fibrous layer of the eye?
sclera
what is the granula iridica?
lumpy dark patch on dorsal (and sometime ventral) margin of the pupil, this is normal
what are the three areas there is a change in refraction in the eye?
cornea, front of lens, back of lens
what is a slit lamp used for?
determine the depth of a lesion
what can the symmetry of the eyelid/lashes tell you?
lowered could indicate pain as the eyelid is slightly closed
raised could indicate swelling and glaucoma
what nerve blocks can be used for eye examination?
auriculopalpebral (motor)
frontal nerve (sensory)
what does fluorescein stain?
corneal stroma (exposed if epithelium is damaged)
how does fluorescein uptake appear with a superficial ulcer?
sharp edges with no stain migration or epithelial under-run
how does fluorescein uptake appear with an indolent ulcer?
get epithelial under-run, with a halo of free around ulcer
how does fluorescein uptake appear with deep stromal ulceration?
very intense staining with migration occurring shortly after
how does fluorescein uptake appear with desematocele?
descemet doesn’t stain, so only walls of ulcer will intently stain
what is a Seidel test?
foreign bodies causing eye penetration, put lots of fluorescein into the eye if there is aqueous humour coming out there will be a stream of green
what is best for assessing tear film quality?
rose bengal stain (will only stain the eye if there is a poor tear film)
what tumours can rose bengal be used for staining?
SCC
what is a midriatic?
drug to dilate the eye
