Operant Conditioning Flashcards
What type of theory is Operant conditioning?
Behaviourist theory
How do we learn through operant conditioning?
We learn through the consequences of our actions - “consequences” in the coaching environment
What form of learning is it?
Associationist
What examination did B. F. Skinner do
Rat is in the box with a lever when pressed upon food comes out.
Food delivery is linked (associated) to pressing the lever
The same thing occurred with the prevention of an electric shock from the ground of the cage
What was the point of the test?
To demonstrate the S- R bond - a stimulus elicits a set response -> can be grooved or honed
What do we groove/hone/overlearn
Manipulate the environment
Behaviour shaping
Need for reinforcement
What reinforcement can strengthen the S-R bond?
Positive reinforcement:
Praise/ success
Strengthens S-R bond
Negative reinforcement:
Remove the criticism
Forms S-R bond
What can weaken the S-R bond?
Punishment
How might coaches go about positive reinforcement?
Praises
Tangible rewards
Set individual targets
