Onychophora Flashcards
1
Q
Name the 8 traits of Phylum Onychophora
A
- Segmented protostomes with teloblastic growths
- Cuticle - molting; Ecdysis (to slip out) via Ecdysone (hormone)
- Coelom reduced - homocoel + heart. Their heart is enveloped by back (pericadium)
- Open circulatory system (dorsal) - endsac. Coelomic space
- Metanephridia - slime gland and salivary gland
- One pair of feeding appendages - jaws
- Unjointed “legs” without intrinsic muscles - lobopods
- Ladder-like, protostomous nervous sytem; ocelli
2
Q
What are the 2 synapomorphies of Onychophora?
A
- Metanephridia - slime gland
- Have lobopods
3
Q
Antennae
A
Sensory perception
4
Q
Antennae
A
shoots out adhesive glue to paralyze and trap prey. Also used for defense
5
Q
Lobopods
A
Locomotion. Has a pad and a claw: 2-partedness ie. biramous
Only controlled by extrinsic muscle
6
Q
Slime glands
A
paired structure that runs along the body behind the oral papilla
7
Q
Heart
A
Located dorsally
8
Q
Anus
A
Where wastes are excreted
9
Q
Salivary gland
A
Produces enzymes
10
Q
Mouth
A
Has jaws that help slice through the cuticles of prey
11
Q
Is Onychophora a true coelom?
A
No, they have a hemocoel, meaning they aren’t a true coelom
12
Q
Nervous system
A
Has a pair of ventral nerve cords
13
Q
3 types of muscles
A
- Dorsoventral muscle
- Circular + longitudinal muscle
- Long muscle
