Chordata Flashcards
1
Q
Name the 8 traits of Phylum Chordata
A
- Bilateral deuterostomes
- Pharyngeal gill slits
- Complete, regionally specialized gut
- Dorsal, hollow nerve cord
- Dorsal notochord - mesodermal endoskeleton
- Endostyle or thyroid - endodermal. Releases tons of mucus that’s used to capture food
- Muscular, post-anal tail
- Circulatory system - usually a closed circulatory system with a complex ventral heart
2
Q
What are the 3 synapomorphies of Chordata?
A
- Dorsal notochord
- Endostyle or thyroid
- Muscular, post-anal tail
3
Q
Caudal fin
A
used for locomotion; side-to-side motion. Metachronal waves start from head then travels to the tail
4
Q
Notochord
A
creates structural integrity along the animal so it can swim through the viscosity of H2O
5
Q
Dorsal hollow nerve cord
A
develops into the central nervous system: the brain and spine
6
Q
Pharynx with gill slits
A
has thick mucus used to capture food. Also used for gas exchange. It has a lot of SA
7
Q
Post-anal tail
A
extends beyond the anus and is used for locomotion
