Q

what is a magma plume? full

A

A magma plume is a hotter area of molten rock compared to the lava from the rest of the sea floor which comes from deep within the Earth’s mantle.

This vertical column of heated material rises because of the lower density which is fuelled by radioactive decay within the mantle.

As the magma plume reaches the Earth’s crust and melts it creates a hotspot.

The magma plume itself stays stationary.

Over time, as the Pacific Ocean plate moves over this hotspot, a chain of volcanoes forms, such as the Hawaiian Islands.

These islands feature shield volcanoes, which have gentle slopes shaping like a shield as the lava can travel further due to the low viscosity of lava that comes from the plume.
