lesson 1 class notes Flashcards
what is a natural hazard?
natural event which causes harm people the environment or infrastructure
what is the saffir-simpson scale?
measures the magnitude of hurricanes
what it the richter scale?
measures the size of earthquakes
what is hazard mitigation?
the strategy’s that are in place to avoid the destruction of natural disasters
what is the difference between mitigation and adaptation?
mitigation is preventing it but adaptation is living with the consequences of it happening
what are the three main hazard categories?
geophysical
atmospheric
hydrological
what are some examples of geophysical hazards?
volcanic eruptions
coastal erosion
landslides
earthquakes
tsunamis
avalanches
what are some examples of atmospheric hazards?
temperatures rising
hurricanes
lightning
wild fires
tornadoes
what are some examples of hydrological hazards?
storm surges
floods
acid rain
drought
salinisation
what is a natural disaster?
the realisation and impacts of a natural hazard
briefly state the different between a natural hazard and a natural disaster
hazard - what is happening to cause the issue
disaster - the after effects of the natural hazard
what are the common characteristics of a natural disaster?
origins are clear
effects are distinctive/bait
short warning time
scale and intensity requires emergency response
effects can be felt long after
most loss of life and damage to property happens shortly after the even has happened
the exposure to the risk is involuntary (especially in LICs)
what are the three types of hazard perceptions?
fatalism
adaption
fear
what is fatalism?
accepting what has happened
what makes up fatalism as a hazard perception?
there are not preventative measures
losses are seen as inevitable
accepting what has happened
often don’t leave the area
