Q

How many approaches may be made?

A

Two at the same aerodrome due to weather, unless:
* significant improvement / emergency
* exceptional circumstances: 3rd may be flown if satisfied that landing assured

Q

What is the approach ban?

Which RVR (s) is controlling?

Minimum RVRs for approach?

A

Applies to RVR / Vis only

May begin an approach, but shall not be continued past 1000 RA* or Final approach if DH above 1000 AAL

TDZ RVR is controlling for all instrument approaches
So are MID and END if reported and relevant.

Chart / 125 / 75
Chart / 75 / 75 if roll-out guidance
Cat IIIb NO DH- only 1 RVR needed

Q

Which RVRs are relevant for take off and landing?

A

RVRs for all parts of runway used for TO roll with RTO to 60kt

Q

What is the definition of an NPA or APV?

Which approaches are NPA / APVs?

A

Non-precision approach / Approach with vertical guidance:

MDA/H 250 ft or more
RVR CMV 750 m or more

APV: RNP LNAV/VNAV and RNP AR
All others are NPA (inc. RNP with LNAV only minima)

Q

What are the visual references for NPA/APV approaches?

A
  • Elements of ALS
  • Threshold / markings / lights (inc. flashing)
  • PAPI
  • TDZ / markings / lights
  • Runway edge lights
  • Other CAA accepted references

Q

Must raw data be monitored if using an overlay?

Can VNAV be used with temperature corrections?

A

Yes, and database must be up-to-date.

VNAV cannot be used with temp corrections

Q

RNP AR:
When can constraints be changed?
When can a Direct To be used?
What visual references?

A

Initial, Intermediate and Missed Approach segments

Direct To only before FAF and not to the start of an RF leg

Same visual references as NPA/APV
* Elements of ALS
* Threshold / markings / lights (inc. flashing)
* PAPI
* TDZ / markings / lights
* Runway edge lights
* Other CAA accepted references

Q

Cat I approach (includes PAR)
Visual references?

LTS CAT I visual references?

A

Cat I Virtually same as NPA

LTS CAT I:
* 3 consecutive lights
* centre of ALS
* TDZ
* Centre / edge
* Combination thereof
* 1 lateral element
* ALS crossbar
* threshold / TDZ barrette

Q

Circling- which pilot should be PF?

What changes made to stability criteria?

Visual references?

Allowed at night?

Can visual references be lost?

If no prescribed tracks, when can the commander leave the initial instrument approach track?

A

Pilot closest to runway
* Commander must consider FO experience *

400 TDZE- max bank 15º, within 30º of Final Approach Track

Can only begin descent below MDA once visual (and references maintained)

Runway environment

Not allowed at night without vertical guidance (PAPI, VASI, ILS)

May lose visual references ONLY with prescribed tracks AND visual with ground / obstacles

Can only leave instrument approach when commander estimates in all probability, continuous visual contact with runway will be maintained, remaining in circling area

Q

Preparation for LVO approach?

A

Check notams for lighting, navaids, RVR sensors
Check QRH/FCOM for required equipment
Check both alternates if below CAT I minima
Consider extra fuel for approach delays

Q

What conditions for a ‘successful’ autoland / approach?

A

50 RA to Flare
* Speed ± 5kt of bug (ignore fluctuations)
* No relevant system failure

300 ft to DA
* No excess deviation
* No go around command from FWC

Landing
* No relevant system failure
* No flare failure
* No de-crab failure
* Between 150-750m of threshold
* Not outside TDZ edge
* No excessive sink
* Bank angle within limit
* No roll-out failure/dev

Q

When must CM1 perform LV take off?
How low RVR is aircraft certified for?

A

  • Approved for less than 150m (to 125m)

15
Q

Cat III minima and visual references? (A/B)

A

Cat IIIa
* DH 100 or less
* RVR 200 or more

Same visual references as LTS Cat I, but no lateral element

Cat IIIb
* DH up to 100
*RVR 200-75

One centreline light (with DH)
None for NO DH

*If RVR / DH don’t match criteria, RVR determines whether Cat III A or B

16
Q

If Fail Passive and RVR is under 300m, should one go around with a failure at or below DH?

A

Go around is assumed, but may land if safer, e.g. if failure in flare.

17
Q

LVO taxi:
Speed? Turns? Checks?

A

10kt or less
Anticipate turns / tracks with chart
Delay all checks until holding point / before taxi
