What is the difference about the need for a vicar general between the CIC 17 and CIC 83?
It is a mandatory position in the CIC 83 (can. 475) and you can have more than 1 for a diocese whereas it was not mandatory in the CIC 17.
The difference between episcopal vicar and vicar general
The competence of an Episcopal Vicar is limited to a determined part of the diocese, or to a specific type of activity, or to the faithful of a particular rite, or to certain groups of people.(can. 476)

- by resignation;
- by transfer;
- by removal;
- by deprivation.
