ocular trauma Flashcards

1
Q

A
  • good history
  • visual acuities
  • examination of the eye (lids, conjunctiva, cornea, anterior segment, pupils, fundus)

16
Q

what is sympathetic ophthalmia?

A
  • penetrating injury to one eye, exposing intra ocular antigens and there is an auto immune reaction in both eyes
  • causes inflammation in both eyes
  • may lead to bilateral blindness (from a unilateral injury)
17
Q

where are small objects most commonly lodged in the eye?

A

-externally in surface of cornea

18
Q

what type of eye injury can u not repair?

A

-posterior eye injury

19
Q

what does sub tarsal refer to?

A

-under the eye lid

20
Q

what usually causes intra ocular foreign bodies?

A

-fast moving particles (e.g. hammer and chisel injuries)

21
Q

what investigations should be done for intra ocular foreign bodies?

A

X ray or CT orbits if suspicion of intra ocular foreign body

22
Q

what is used to test for burns?

A

-use pH paper

23
Q

what does alkali burn cause?

A
  • limbal ischaemia

- this can cause chronic problems of the cornea

24
Q

what is a bad sign post alkali burn injury?

A

-a very white eye

25
Q

what is the management for chemical injury?

A
26
Q

what is the golden rule for chemical injuries?

A

-immediate irrigation of chemical injuries (the solution to pollution is dilution)
