nerve palsy Flashcards
what muscles are responsible for eye movement ?
-4 recti and 2 oblique muscles
what muscles are responsible for superior eyelid movement?
levator palpebrae superioris
what are the attachments of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle?
- originates from the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone
- attaches to the superior tarsal plate of the upper eyelid
what innervates the levator palpebral superioris muscle?
Oculomotor nerve (CN III)
-sympathetic nervous system
what is the thick plate of connective tissue that covers the upper eyelid called?
superior tarsal plate
where do the recti muscles originate from?
- the common tendinous ring
what does the superior rectus attach to?
-originates from the superior part of the common tendinous ring and attaches to the superior and anterior aspect of the sclera
what is the action of the superior rectus muscle?
- main movement is elevation
- also contributes to adduction and medial rotation of the eye
what innervates the superior rectus muscle?
- CN III
- oculomotor
where does the inferior rectus attach?
-originates from the inferior part of the common tendinous ring and attaches to the inferior and anterior aspect of the sclera
role of inferior rectus muscle?
- main movement is depression
- also contributes to adduction and lateral rotation of the eye
what nerve innervates the inferior rectus muscle?
Oculomotor CNIII
where does the medial rectus muscle attach?
- originates from the medial part of the common tendinous ring
- attaches to the anteromedial aspect of the sclera
role of the medial rectus?
-adducts the eyeball
what nerve innervates the medial rectus?
-oculomotor nerve CNIII
where does the lateral rectus attach?
- originates from the lateral part of the common tendinous ring
- attaches to the anterolateral aspect of the sclera
what is the role of the lateral rectus muscle?
-abducts the eye
what innervates the lateral rectus?
Abducens nerve (CN V)
where does the superior oblique attach?
- originates from the sphenoid bone
- passes through the trochlear and then attaches to the sclera or the eye, posterior to the superior rectus
- takes an angles approach
role of the superior oblique muscle?
-depresses, abducts and medially rotates the eye
what nerve innervates the superior oblique muscle?
-trochlear nerve CNIV
where does the inferior oblique muscle attach?
- originates from the anterior aspect of the orbital floor
- attaches to the sclera of the eye posterior to the lateral rectus
what is the role of the inferior oblique?
-elevates, abducts and laterally rotates the eyeball
what nerve innervates the inferior oblique muscle?
-oculomotor nerve (CNIII)
how does 3rd nerve palsy present?
- down and out eye
- droopy eyelid
